Notes:

1. The original CONFOCAL design used an  air-cooled argon  laser. This has additional multiple lasers lines (488, 532) that might be useful. However, this laser required 2 tube repairs in 4 years at an additional cost of $3000.
3a. A solid state laser is preferable to the argon ion laser. The solid sate laser is considerable smaller, requires no air cooling and has a greater predicted hour usage. The solid state lasers is rapidly decreasing in price. 20 mW is sufficient power at 488 nm. We currently only use about 1% of the output.
 4. It is recommended to have a table 4 x 6 feet. This gives plenty of space.
 5. The pixel clock board is not required. The driver board requires a heat sink. However, the power transistor heat sink is not flush with the board edge. Fabricate an aluminum spacer to bolt the board to the control box side or base.
11. The number of PMTs required depends on the number of channels required. Purchase a PMT, socket and power supply for each channel. This applies to the control potentiometer (50K).
 19. When purchasing, request the drivers for Mu-Tech board that have the ability to perform a) pixel reversal and b) image distortion correction, c) live display during recording as developed for Dr. Sanderson. An evaluation version of the software is available at their web site.
 20. This motherboard listed works with the Mu-Tech card and Video Savant. Other motherboards may not. Contact IO Industries for other compatible motherboards. It is not worth buying the latest thing.
26. A read-write CD provides the option of archiving and back-up of data. The RW-CD-ROM is rapidly being replaced by RW-DVD (ROM or RAM).
28. No specific requirements for the basic components of the computer.
30. A PCI controller card  for the SCSI drives is preferable to a controller built into the mother board as this allows for upgrades in disk access speed without changing the whole system.

 31. These SCSI drives have probably been superseded Newer drives will have a larger capacity, faster access speed and will be cheaper.

32.  The Seagate hard disc is for the operating system and can be anything. The larger capacity  and faster access time are recommended.

 33.  The LS6T2 was used because it has a wider aperture making alignment less critical. However, this shutter however cannot open and close as fast as the 3mm diameter shutter. The teflon coated blades are not usually used for high-powered lasers but seem to be OK in our systems.

 34. The power supply/controller for the shutter is a simple way to integrate the shutter into the control box..

 36. This needs to be machined and attached to the rectangular aperture such that the knife edge shutters are at the focal plane of the eye piece.

 37. Only required if using a multi-line laser . Not needed for solid state laser.

 39. This can be custom made by your machine shop

 41. Rail is cut into 2 to use for sliding mount of eyepiece and scanner mirrors

56 - 59. The exact number of posts at set heights that are required is difficult to predict because this will depend on the alignment of the system. Having enough on hand to swap components avoids considerable frustration.

40 - 60. These components can be bought from any optics company.

68. A filter cube cassette allows the filter set to be easily and quickly inserted into or removed from the illumination pathway.

83.  All electrical components can be purchased from any vendor. It is recommended that the catalog number is checked before purchasing.
